As many college students may already know, the transition from a high school senior to a college freshman is not an easy task. Ashlee Venson, an 18-year-old freshman at Towson University, is beginning to get frustrated with the duties of being a college student.

“College is much harder than high school. There’s so much more work that needs to be done and turned in so quickly, that I get irritated at times. It seems like there is not enough hours in a day.”

Venson is hoping that there are better ways that she can cope with her frustration because she knows that getting aggravated with the amount of work that she has to do will not solve her problems.

“I think we should have like a class or something for freshman that teaches us how to manage our time. I mean after all most of us did just get out of high school.”

Luckily enough for Venson, Clinical Director Dr. Gregory Reising, who works at Towson University’s Counseling Center is developing a coping skills clinic to assist students with learning the skills that are needed to cope with the countless demands of college academic life.

“We are going to be focusing in on time management skills and how to take care of procrastination problems.”

While the coping skills clinic does hold group sessions, individual sessions about any concerns are available as well.

Dr. Reising is hoping that this free and confidential clinic will better assist students in coping with their academic concerns.

“We don’t expect students to change their whole lives around, we just want to identify the few things that you can do to improve. The Counseling Center is a friendly place, we’re a professional service and we do help a lot of students with a lot of different things.”

Venson, who is considering attending one of Dr. Reising’s sessions, hopes that it will help her throughout the rest of her college career.
